Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) is a federally-mandated program managed in the State of Washington by the State Health Care Authority. It is a program that provides transportation to and from Medicaid-covered appointments for Medicaid clients. It also provides transportation assistance in the form of bus passes and fuel vouchers.

Many states, including Washington, administer NEMT through the use of transportation brokers, who serve as "gatekeepers" to ensure that program eligibility rules are being followed, and to coordinate the scheduling of trips. Paratransit Services has played an important role in the development of NEMT in Washington. We operated the brokerage pilot project in Pierce County in 1988, giving us the honor of being the State’s original NEMT broker!
